- Robert Calvert reads "Fly On The Screen" from his poetry collection "Centigrade 232" (1977)

"232 is the temperature at which writing paper burns rather than book paper. It's meant to signify the writer destroying his rough drafts"
- Robert Calvert

"Appendix Appendix" (2007)
Ryan Gander & Dexter Sinister with Anthony Huberman recorded this spoken-word version of the pilot programme from Ryan Gander & Stuart Bailey's recently-published proposal for a TV series, "Appendix Appendix". The programme is a further attempt to chase a medium running away from itself.
Recorded on location in Geneva on 26 October 2007, the show was first broadcast on WFMU, 91.1FM on 11 November 2007.

- Richard Brautigan's "Love Poem" from "Listening To Richard Brautigan" (1973)
A one-line work read, in different intonations, 18 consecutive times by 18 different readers, including Michael McClure, avant-garde filmmaker Bruce Conner, photographer Imogen Cunningham, San Francisco Chronicle newspaper columnist Herb Caen, Brautigan's girlfriend Valerie Estes, and Brautigan's daughter Ianthe Brautigan. "The people were chosen by Richard, they were friends of his," explains Barry Miles, publisher of International Times, who instigated a series of spoken word albums to be released on The Beatles' short-lived experimental subsidiary label of Apple Records, Zapple (Allen Klein folded the label even before the release of the Brautigan record, which would only be released in one EMI Harvest label US pressing years after recording). "I think Valerie Estes had a hand in choosing some people. I'm pretty sure she came up with Don Allen [a renowned literary editor who edited Brautigan's first four books], for instance. The poem was so short that I originally asked him to read it twice. Where the idea of using different people came from, I don't remember."

- Vito Acconci's "The Bristol Project" (2001)
Acconci's spoken depiction of a futuristic landscape that contains many of his architectural projects.

- "Uptown Haters Skit", excerpt from Sean Paul's "Dutty Rock" album (2003)

Y3Kast One : September 2009 : "CONLANGALANG"

"... But suddenly I viddied, that thinking was for the gloopy ones, and that the oomny ones used, like, inspiration and what bog sends. For now it was lovely music that came to my aid. There was a window open with the stereo on, and I viddied right at once what to do ..."
- Alex narrates in Nadsat, the fictional argot of Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange" novel.

The first Y3Kast will be an ever-growing, multiple-hour study on audio projects that involve constructed languages, fictional vernaculars, and idiocratic vocal practice as a means of creative expression outside of traditional "natural languages". From
Arthur Machen's forbidden Aklo scriptures, first penned in his "The White People" of 1899 (and later adopted by H.P. Lovecraft, Alan Moore, Robert Anton Wilson, amongst others), to Christian Vander's Kobaïan, used to communicate a "vision of humanity's spiritual and ecological future" through the lyrics of his musical group Magma, this artistic construction of languages, or "glossopoeia" as J.R.R. Tolkien once coined it, has played an important role in the illustration of fictional worlds; in the unveiling of possible universes. Other planned languages, such as many examples of argots, consciously veil, keeping information channeled and coded from outsider majorities through manipulating common languages into slang, secretive subcultural vernaculars. The rejection of native languages altogether through using the voice as an experimental tool or musical instrument goes further again in transcending nationalistic communication boundaries, to reach a more universal level of exchange and to propel the vast potential of the human (or other fellow earth species) voice beyond the common word. To sing it differently.

We hope you enjoy the first two installments of our mixtape ramble. More is to come ...

A Little About.

Y3Kasts are to become a regular audio broadcast hosted by Joshua Petherick and Christopher LG Hill and presented by Y3K Gallery in Melbourne, Australia with the intention of creating an informal platform for audio-based projects that can exist parallel to the gallery's more architecturally-bound exhibition calender. The shows will be available as MP3 format Podcasts via the Y3K site (y3kradio.blogspot.com), along with accompanying texts (essays, transcriptions, tracklists). With time the programme of broadcasts will hopefully have the breadth to encompass all manner of audio work formats - radio plays, comedy sketches, monologues, music mixtapes, field recordings, discussions, artists research material, etc. - to encourage new dialogue and modes of performance and presentation, beyond the visual.

The broadcasts will be sporadic.
